Al helemaal wanneer Esox lucius er al een aantal jaar op heeft zitten en een lijf van formaat heeft verkregen. Door zich te goed te doen aan prooien als soortgenoten, ratten, jonge eenden, meerkoeten – al moordend en plunderend en om zonder enige schroom compleet verscheurde witvisfamilies achter zich te laten. Een dier, of beter gezegd een beest, dat niet alleen door de verhalen van zíjn belagers (óf juist aanbidders?) een gevreesde reputatie heeft opgebouwd, maar dat zeker ook afdwingt door zijn intrigerende verschijning ...\u003cbr\u003eWant waren wij als jonge sportvissertjes immers niet allemaal volledig onder de indruk bij het zien van zo’n snoek voor die allereerste keer? Zo’n vis sprak direct tot de verbeelding, en of je hem nu zelf had gevangen of niet, dat maakte niet eens uit. Dat brute uiterlijk, het gevlekte gespierde lichaam, verpakt in kleine strakke schubben en dan die vervaarlijke kop met een bek vol ontelbare scherpe tanden. Zijn ogen altijd onbevreesd, ook al was hij als koning (de grootste zijn trouwens meestal dames) ditmaal voor één keer zelf gevangen. Ja, die roversogen dwingen altijd en immer groot respect af en dat doen ze vangst na vangst, jaar na jaar, nog altijd.\u003cbr\u003eEn zo is het ook de schrijver van dit boek vergaan. Michel Verlaak is al zijn hele leven gefascineerd door snoek. Door de prachtige vis zelf maar ook door de wijze waarop hij deze vis zou kunnen vangen; door te proberen de onderwaterwereld te doorgronden om zijn vangst – al is het maar heel even - te kunnen bewonde­ren. Dat vissen doet hij met een enorme gedrevenheid; uit pure passie voor de vis en de omgeving waarin deze leeft. Verlaak be­hoort tot de fanatiekste snoekvissers die ik ken en is iemand die observeert en met open blik nadenkt over dat snoekvissen. De snoek vormt een rode draad in zijn bestaan, de vis is onderdeel van zijn leven geworden, dat kan beslist niet meer als gewone hobby worden afgedaan. Het bracht hem een bont gezelschap aan vrienden, een internationaal gezelschap met allen dezelfde focus, het vangen van die verdraaide Esox ...\u003cbr\u003eHet vissen leidde hem naar de meest bijzondere plaatsen. In zijn eigen België, in Nederland, maar ook Ierland. Het land dat een speciaal plaatsje in zijn hart heeft. Hij beviste wateren in alle diversiteit; van klein, ondiep en overzichtelijk tot aan weids, grillig, diep en zeer moeilijk te doorgronden. De basis was altijd dezelfde: die onophoudelijke drang naar een nieuw snoekavontuur. Het maakte hem tot een zeer veelzijdige snoek­visser, eentje die in tegenstelling tot andere experts zich niet al­leen richt op één bepaalde aanpak, maar bewust kiest voor een grote variatie aan technieken \u0026amp; tactieken. En hoewel je het hem in al zijn oprechte bescheidenheid zelf niet zal horen zeggen, is hij binnen die snoekvisserij niet minder dan een heel groot talent en een zeer gerespecteerd visser.\u003cbr\u003eEn goddank is het niet alleen het vissen dat hem zo goed afgaat. Ook het schrijven doet hij met een zeer herkenbare stijl, vorm en overtuiging. Toen hij op zekere dag aan dit monnikenwerk begon, want zo mag je het schrijven van zo’n pil toch wel noemen, kon hij waarschijnlijk niet bevroeden dat het zo’n compleet na­slagwerk zou worden. De prachtige aaneengesmede zinnen spreken al die passie subliem uit, maar onderwijzen je ondertussen bijna onbewust maar deskundig over de wereld van het snoekvissen. Dit alles is overzichtelijk gemaakt in zeven lijvige hoofdstukken die heerlijk weglezen en zijn voorzien van fotografie om bij weg te dromen. Het zal u de tijd doen vergeten, maar bij het dichtslaan van het boek doen verlangen naar een eigen snoekvangst, wellicht met een juist geleerd trucje van de meester zelve!\u003cbr\u003eBuiten de eer dit voorwoord te mogen schrijven, had ik ook het grote genoegen om als een van de eersten het manuscript te lezen. Een goede reden voor mij om de hengels op te tuigen en naar het water te gaan…\u003cbr\u003eMaar u, beste lezer, u heeft geluk. Aan boord bij Verlaak is er nog een plaatsje vrij. Hij is net zijn Rana aan het traileren. Neem de tijd en ontspan, want Michel neemt u mee naar zijn beste stekken in binnen- en buitenland, van rivieren, veenpoelen, kanalen tot aan de grootste plassen van de Benedenrivieren. De vriendelijkheid zelve zal vertellen over de denkbare manieren van vissen, hij gunt immers iedereen zijn vangst! En hij laat het complete arsenaal aan kunstaas passeren, de bijbehorende geschiedenis, en het materi­aal waarmee men dat het beste aanbiedt. Maar ook waar en hoe je dit alles het beste gebruikt. Ondertussen vertelt hij over zijn beste visvrienden – bepaald niet de minsten – die hij speciaal voor u heeft geïnterviewd, zodat hij hen meteen kon ontfutselen hoe zij hun vissermanskunsten verder hebben verfijnd. Tot slot deelt hij zijn spannendste avonturen en meest onvergetelijke vangsten, maar zonder op te scheppen. En daar zou hij met de publicatie van dit boek eigenlijk alle reden voor hebben, want sinds lange tijd is er geen uitgebreid snoekboek verschenen in ons taalgebied. Ik ben blij dat Michel Verlaak deze taak op zich heeft genomen, want ‘Esox!’ is van grote klasse. Sla gauw dit blad om en overtuig uzelf.
